About the Hut
Álftavötn Hut is a restored building originally used by farmers when gathering their sheep from the highlands. Members of Útivist rebuilt it some years ago, and it is now a cozy and comfortable mountain hut.
There is no warden permanently stationed at Álftavötn, but the warden at Strútur Hut also oversees it. Accommodation and camping fees can be paid at Strútur, at Útivist’s office in Reykjavík, or by placing the fee into the collection box inside the hut.
Access
The easiest route to Álftavötn is from Skaftártunga via road F208. North of the highland center Hólaskjól, turn left onto road F233. The unbridged Syðri-Ófæra River must be crossed. Those unfamiliar with the river should ask for advice about the safest crossing point — the warden at Hólaskjól usually knows the conditions.
After crossing the river, take a left turn onto a small track leading almost to the hut; the final 200 meters must be walked.
